Why we love emeralds - CINCO jewelry

Emerald, a variety of transparent green beryl, stands among the most prized and coveted gemstones in the world. Its characteristic vivid green—a luminous tone ranging from medium to deep forest hues—has captivated civilizations for millennia. More than just a beautiful stone, the emerald is a symbol of power, wisdom, and enduring elegance across cultures and centuries.

A Gemstone Steeped in Legend and History

Throughout history, emeralds have been revered as sacred and powerful. Ancient texts tell us that emeralds were among the four precious gems bestowed upon King Solomon by God, granting him dominion over all creation. In Hindu tradition, emeralds symbolize purity of soul, prosperity, and spiritual success. The ancient Greeks adorned the Temple of Hercules with emeralds, while Romans associated the stone with fertility, renewal, and healing powers. Even Alexander the Great is said to have worn a magical emerald on his belt as he conquered empires.

The earliest known emerald mine lies in the mountainous Wadi Sikait valley in Egypt's Eastern Desert, where mining is believed to have begun during the late Ptolemaic period in the first century B.C. These mines became legendary as Cleopatra's favorite source—emeralds were among her most treasured possessions, cementing the gemstone's association with royalty and feminine power.

The World's Most Valuable Emeralds

The most famous emerald in modern history is the Rockefeller Emerald, an extraordinary 18.04-carat stone owned by the Rockefeller family for decades. In 2017, Harry Winston acquired this radiant green gem at Christie's New York for $5.5 million, making it the most expensive emerald ever sold at auction on a per-carat basis.

Before this record, the title belonged to Elizabeth Taylor's iconic 23.46-carat Bulgari emerald pendant, sold by Christie's in 2000 for over $6.5 million—though at a lower per-carat price than the Rockefeller stone.
