top 10 design books every design lover should own

top 10 design books every design lover should own

are you a design lover looking to expand your knowledge and expertise in the field? no design library is complete without these books — saying that as a designer might be suspicious, but…

the elements of typographic style, by robert bringhurst
well, of course I would start with the “bible" I used for my master’s thesis… typography has a long and illustrious history and it is unquestionably an important subject of the “design world”. written in 1996, robert bringhurst writes about typography in a really poetic form while acknowledging that the period of a typeface’s development reflects not only its style but also its manufacturing process… a brilliant vision I would say.

woman made: great women designers, by jane hall
"woman made" celebrates the innovative — and frequently disregarded — women creators of the 20th and early 21st centuries, ranging from postmodernism to memphis design to the bauhaus movement. the book serves as both a visual tribute and an educational resource. a must have.

— how to be a graphic designer without losing your soul, by adrian shaughnessy
don't worry about the "without losing your soul" in the title of the book before you start, adrian shaughnessy is not as romantic as you might expect! this was the first book I ever got when I decided to study design, and it really introduced me to freelancing. it is an excellent resource for freelancers in general. shaughnessy is a graphic designer by trade, but his insight into what it takes to become a business professional in the creative world.

interaction of color, by josef albers
albers is the genius of color! the language of this book is simple and little bit scientific but understandable — suitable for those readers, designers and psychologists who are interested to know about color more than an art or science.

redefining comfort, by jake arnold
this is the first book from a rising star of the interior design world: jake arnold. In this book, he shares nine project, from sprawling estates in california to seaside homes in florida. perfect for styling, reading, browsing and getting inspired. if you enjoy design… get it, you won't regret it!

made to stick, by chip heath and dan heath
if you google “top 10 marketing books”, this book will be on any list. it is about how to make your ideas memorable. this book could have discussed what causes some content to "go viral" if it had been released sooner… however, this was released back in 2007, and the book's current appeal stems in part from its allusions to cultural trends that were somewhat obsolete even at the time. to sum up: everything about the book just sticks!

don't make me think, by steve krug
one of the best books I have ever read for work. although it was published years ago with user experience design and content strategy in mind, its teachings are still relevant to a wide range of business and customer experience issues! extremely helpful.
